Gundy, as Goondiwindi is usually called, is located on the Queensland side of the New South Wales/Queensland border. Gundy is 350km west of Brisbane, ideally located on the Macintyre River.

Goondiwindi is a bit of a surprise to a traveller. After many miles of what is rather uninteresting and dry countryside, you stumble across a town that really has the lot. We guess since no town is nearby, and the fact that it is the junction of five highways, Gundy must cater for these travellers. The town has been a port of call for us as we have travelled from western New South Wales to Queensland, so we have a little first hand experience.

After leaving the large roundabout where highways join, driving up the main street is really nice. It is very leafy and clean. The main strip of shops is very long and very busy. Most of the shops you would expect from a larger town are here.

So this is a town which many pass through going somewhere else. Surely it is appealing to live in, after all, over 5,000 people decided to stay. Let's see what this town on the Macintyre has to offer.

ACTIVITIES AND EVENTS

Annual events include:

We did not list them, but there are several motor racing events held. These events are:

  • Northern Inland Motocross Series Round One

  • Final Round of Australian Off Road Racing Championships

  • Suzuki South East Queensland Motocross Series

Obviously if you are a motor head, this is the place to be different times of the year.

Things to do around town include strolling the river walkway, visit the native Botanic Gardens, bird trails, and the customary old buildings and other constructions.

One of the main attractions of Goondiwindi is the Water Park. Really just an enlarged lagoon, this park attracts wildlife, and water sports.

TOWN SERVICES

Schools. The town has 3 primary schools and one high school. TAFE courses are also conducted.

Health. The services on offer are best viewed at the Sudholz website.

Transport. As mentioned in the introduction, Gundy is located at the junction of five highways: Newell, Barwon, Leichhardt, Cunningham and Gore. Many highways means many bus services pass through. Daily bus services operate to Brisbane, Moree, Melbourne, Toowoomba and Lightning Ridge. Air services operate out of Moree, one hour away.

GOONDIWINDI AREA

As previously noted, Gundy is, well, not near much. The countryside is farming land, being for cotton, cereals and livestock. Any town, even small villages are some distance away. The exception would be the village of Boggabilla, which is like a twin town in New South Wales.

Villages found within the, quite extensive, Waggamba shire include Toobeah, Bungunya, Talwood, Weengallon and Yelarbon. Yelarbon is a town you travel through between Gundy and Warwick, and so many travellers would be familiar with this little railway town.

On the way to Warwick there is a small town you travel through called Inglewood. If there is any town worth visiting on the trip it is probably Inglewood, being a large 'olive' town. At the very least, due to the distances out there, it is a convenient place to refuel and refresh.

The Macintyre River is very much a part of "what to do" in Gundy. It is the lifeblood of the town, and a source of fun. The following two images are of the Macintyre...
