Guyra
Population: 2,000
Guyra is 38km north of Armidale on the New England Highway. It is one of the highest towns in New South Wales, being at an altitude of 1320m. It is not uncommon for the town to receive snow in winter months. The town is known for its extremely cold winters by Australian standards, with an average of 59 nights with subzero temperatures each year.
The town's history goes back to the 1830's The town was really boosted by the discovery of gold, tin and diamonds in the late 1800's.
Annual events include the Lamb and Potato Festival in January, the Agricultural Show and Clay Target Competition in February, the Guyra Cup Horse Race in March, the Grand Parade and Historical Racing Car Rally in April, the Gun Club Annual Open Competition in July, the NSW Open Shooting Competition and the Rodeo in November.
The New England is renowned for many national parks and the town is ideal to use as a base. The New England National Park, Guy Fawkes River National Park, Cathedral Rock and the Styx River National Park are to the east and have camping areas and walking tracks.
