At one time, Hill End produced the world's largest gold nugget, 'Holtermann's Nugget,' which weighed 285kg. This was in 1872. News spread and the town swelled to 8,000.
Today, the gold is gone, and so have the people. The National Parks and Wildlife Service now manages this ghost town, protecting it as a historical site of national significance.
There is a lot of history attached to this town. We recommend visiting the Hill End site for detailed information.
