Menindee

Darling River, Menindee
Darling River

Population: 1,000

Menindee is located 112km east of Broken Hill. It conveniently sits on the banks of the Darling River. The river is the lifeblood of the town, providing most of the economic benefits.

It is such a surprise, after having travelled through so much arid country, to find a desert location awash with water. Some water is siphoned off the river to fill the Menindee Lakes system, a draw card for tourists, even residents of Broken Hill.

Thanks to the water, agriculture thrives here, even in arid Australia. The country barely supports grazing, yet we find fruit orchards and vegetables under cultivation. What is the product that puts this own on the map? Grapes, in particular, table grapes. The grapes grown here are the first to hit the markets in the capital cities because of the unique desert climate in which they are grown. We stayed for a while with a picker for one of these vineyards. He could bring home as many 'unsuitable' grapes as he could carry. We can tell you, these 'unsuitable' grapes are the best grapes we have ever seen and eaten!

Here's a few views of the lake system. Unfortunately, in drought conditions, sometimes there isn't enough water to put into the lakes...
