MUDGEE AREA

Two towns in the shire, Rylstone and Gulgong, have populations in excess of 1,000.

As noted in the introduction, the region is blessed with natural beauty. Let's briefly consider some of these attractions.

Possibly the most important aspect of Wollemi National Park is that it protects, permanently, the largest remaining forested wilderness in NSW, including the Colo-Capertee river system, used extensively with the surrounding bushland for hardy recreation activities. The Colo River and its gorge is undoubtedly one of the most spectacular in Australia. Special features of interest include the Capertee Valley, historic ruins at Newnes and the Glow Worm Tunnel.

The Wollemi Pine, a "living dinosaur" was discovered in Wollemi National Park in 1994. The tree dates back about 100 million years. The Pines survival depends upon its isolation.

Munghorn Gap, Mudgee
Munghorn Gap N.P.

The main feature of Goulburn River National Park is the river, with its' wide sandy banks offering easy walking. There are many interesting sandstone caves in the cliffs lining the banks of the river. In spring and late winter there is an abundant display of wildflowers, providing magnificent photo opportunities.

Other national parks and reserves are Coolah Tops National Park and Munghorn Gap Nature Reserve.

Situated on the Cudgegong River and set amongst rolling green hills, Windamere Dam is a popular spot for fishing, sailing, swimming, canoeing and boating. Camping is permitted at the Cudgegong Waters Park and there are picnic and Barbecue facilities and a lookout near the Dam wall.
