Orange

Kite St, Orange Orange statistics:

Population: 40,000

Postcode: 2800

Annual rainfall: 900mm

Temperatures (average):12-26C summer, 0-9C winter

What is Orange best known for? Apples of course! The fruit bearing the city's name cannot be grown here because it is too cold. But it is perfect for apples, as well as pears and some stone fruit.

This is a "trendy" city. It is growing at a rate quite extraordinary for a rural community. Perhaps it is becauseit is a cultural city, blending historic buildings and streetscapes with cosmopolitan cafes, restaurants, theatres and galleries. The city's location makes for easy travelling to Sydney (3.5 hours to the east) or Canberra (3 hours south east). The location in central New South Wales puts it close to many other country cities and towns so that you are never too far away from so many significant places.

By why look elsewhere? Why not just consider what this city itself has to offer a potential new resident. Will you find your new home here?

CLIMATE

As noted in the introduction, the climate suits the growing of apples and the like. And why is that? Because it is cool. Summer is not hot; a welcome relief from the heat to the west and also on the coast. But it is winter that a new resident needs to be prepared for. Yes, it is cold, but if it were truly unbearable, why would the city's population be increasing at something like 6%?

The climate makes for distinct seasons. But don't other locations have the same? Yes, but it is more pronounced in this city. It is known as Australia's Colour City, not because ithas the same name as a colour, but rather the changing of the colour of the leaves. These colours are showcased through the city's Cook and Robertson Parks and the Botanic Gardens.

As noted already, this is a city of culture. It has a civic theatre (496 seater), 13 galleries and museums that we could count and 101 parks and gardens filled with monuments and sculptures. Add to this the wineries and fine dining, and you can well and truly appreciate why it is called a cultural city. There are many wineries and vineyards around the city, if that is where your interest lies.

How do I find my way around Orange?

ORANGE AREA

Mt Canobolas, Orange

The natural feature dominating Orange is Mt Canobolas. At 1395m, it is the highest mountain in the central west. The summit provides a 360 degree view of the surrounding area. This summit, by the way, often has snow on it.

Wineries dot the countryside. And there is a lot of them! Tours take visitors to some, offering tastings. Don't try all the tastings though, else you may not remember the day when it comes to tomorrow.

Small towns and villages found nearby include: Canowindra, Molong, Millthorpe, Eugowra, Cudal, Lucknow, Byng, Ophir, and Manildra.

ECONOMICS

Employment. The unemployment rate is around the national average. By far the largest single employer is Electrolux, employing around 1,000 people to manufacture whitegoods. Government services probably employ the greatest amount of people across several organisations, such as health and education. Retail is also a significant employer.

A boon for any regional location is the discovery of valuable minerals and metals. Orange has a long mining history. The Cadia and Ridgeway Gold and Copper Mines, operated by Newcrest, employs a large number of people. It is expected the mine will employ 500 people long-term. And, as mines do, generate opportunities in other industries supporting mining.

Investing. More information soon. Begin your search for real estate or rental properties in the area.
