Portland NSW
Portland is a small town with a population near 2,000. It is located north-west of Lithgow, being only about 30 minutes away and Bathurst 40 minutes. It is set amongst lovely scenery and is set close to the Wollemi and Gardens of Stone national parks.
Portland has the claim that it helped build Sydney. How was that? To build cities, one needs cement. Australia's first cement works was constructed here in 1902, and supplied the cement to build Sydney and many other locations. That was until 1991 when the facility was closed.
Of economic importance to the town is Mt Piper Power Station. This station is relatively young in age and tours of the facility are available. The supporting coal mines are also significant to the town's economy, supplying the power station, as well as local homes.
Can you show me where Portland is?
A 'touristy' feature of the town are old advertisement signs. The historic brands have been added as a tourist attraction. But let's face it, anything (except graffiti) that can brighten up dull brick walls should be welcomed. The town is to be congratulated for its innovation.
