Rockley

53 kilometres from Oberon is Rockley, a historic village classified by the National Trust. It has a number of historic buildings still in use, including the Anglican and Catholic Churches, a hotel and the Mill Museum. This was originally a flour mill which still houses much original milling equipment. The museum has a collection of early village, shop and police record books and an extensive collection of early photographs and clothing. Behind the building is a large collection of early machinery.

In the 1840's copper was found to the south. The resulting influx of miners boosted the town's population to 3,000. The town is essentially like it was during its heyday.

A delightful place for picnics is the park in the centre of the village, which is also near the weir on Peppers Creek. There are barbecue facilities, swings and toilets, and a swimming hole and wading pool for small children. A major rodeo is held every February.

There is lots to do with bushwalking, fossicking, great trout fishing in the local streams and at nearby Chifley Dam or visiting nearby Jenolan Caves and Abercrombie Caves.

Finished with Rockley? Return to Oberon or Bathurst.
