Silverton

Silverton hotel, near Broken HillAlthough you may not have heard of Silverton, you are likely to have seen it before. You see, this village has featured in many film and television programs, some known only nationally, some internationally. Some of the better known include Mad Max, Priscilla Queen of the Desert and Dirty Deeds. Outside the hotel you will see the Mad Max car.

What attracts film makers to this little place? The air is clean, the light is excellent, the weather rarely hinders outdoor activities, and the place has so much character about it.

Mundi Mundi Plains, SilvertonNot far to the west are the Mundi Mundi Plains, where tourists watch the sun set. It is a special moment to see the sun go down, and great if you have a suitable camera to capture the moment. We observed the tourists set up tables and eat cheese and drink wine to a setting sun.

The town's history dates back to around the time minerals were discovered in nearby Broken Hill. What did prospectors find? Think about the town's name and you will work it out. The population increased to 3,000, but today has only 50 residents. Most homes were taken with the leaving residents. Therefore, what remains are scattered buildings, which, thankfully, have been well kept.

Take a look at the town now...

Artists seem to be attracted to this outback town. Several of the existing homes have been converted into mini galleries. We can thoroughly recommend visiting the Peter Browne Gallery. We know, art is beautiful only in the eye of the beholder, so this gallery won't appeal to all. But it did appeal to us. We would describe the art as humorous Australian outback.

Please visit the Discover Silverton website for information on everything this unique town has to offer. And by the way, Silverton is 25km north west of Broken Hill.

Return to Broken Hill or visit another town.

If you have ever been to this great little location, please let us know what you think.
