The historic town of Tottenham was gazetted as a village in 1903, following the registration of a copper mining lease in 1901. The population of the town is 380, and it supports and sustains a regional population of 2000.

The beautifully presented streetscapes, refurbished shop facades, lush parks and gardens and friendly relaxed atmosphere are immediately evident. It is an important population centre located within Lachlan Shire Council, part of the Heart of NSW.

Just 500kms west of Sydney via fully sealed roads, this is the closest town to the geographical centre of NSW. Located 35 kilometres west of the township, this spot is marked by a cairn constructed of materials taken from the original copper mining leases.

Tottenham is on a direct route linking the Mitchell Highway from Nyngan to Nevertire through the Heart of NSW to the Newell and Mid Western Highways, the Lachlan Valley Way and the Kidman Way.

With the advent of the copper mining industry came the railway line, allowing the region to build a very strong primary production sector, based on large scale cropping and grazing, which continues to this day. The township, through its numerous business houses, supports a strong and growing agricultural region.

Tottenham is a farming town, just 32 km from the Cairn which marks the geographic Centre of NSW. It also has a beautifully preserved local pub as well as two bowling and an 18-hold golf course. The lovingly restored Tottenham Hotel was built in 1931 and well worth a visit. From its beginnings as a coal mining town, the town has prospered to become a major primary producing area.

The town and district present many great advantages to their residents including:

  • Low cost of living due to cheaper rates (comparison Lachlan vs city) and the low cost of accommodation both rental and purchased.

  • A comfortable lifestyle in a close knit community, with very low crime rates, a friendly and caring community spirit, a high quality of both recreational and social infrastructure, and the backdrop of the natural bush setting and the abundant wildlife.

  • Opportunities involving upskilling of both youth and general population via improved access to training and technology, thus retention of population (reversal of drain)
