Walcha
Population: 1,500
The town of Walcha (pronounced 'wolka') is 1067 metres above sea level, which can be reached by road, rail and air. Armidale is to the north.
With some 146,000 ha of National Park and Wilderness in the Shire, Walcha is the gateway to some of the most magnificent eco experiences in Australia. Indeed part of the Central Eastern Rainforests Reserves, a World Heritage area, is located within the Shire.
Apart from these wonderful ecotourism destinations, the Shire has a lot to offer. It is one of the most productive agricultural areas in Australia. It is also a major hardwood timber producer and is set to take its place in the forefront of softwood production in Australia.
The district provides some of the best fishing waters in New South Wales for a variety of fish, mainly trout.
The cool, clear running waters of the highlands provide the perfect environment for trout populations to breed and thrive and each year they attract anglers from all parts of Australia and overseas to try their luck.
The towns is an ideal base for visiting nearby parks and forests. These include Oxley Wild Rivers NP, Enfield SF, Werrikimbe NP, Winterbourne SF and Nowendoc SF.
